2004 Oct 03 - Superset: Rusedski loses in final Greg Rusedski was unable to cope with the brilliance of Croatian Mario Ancic as he lost 11-9 in the £250,000 winner-takes-all Superset Tennis final at Wembley Arena, London. The British No.2 eased past legend Boris Becker in a tight opening round then crushed Spaniard Tommy Robredo in the semi-final. Before the match against Ancic a generous Greg Rusedski promised to buy everyone in the crowd a drink if he won the £250,00 prize so the patriotic crowd had more than one reason to be disappointed with the result - although Greg did hand one lucky spectator his consolation bottle of champagne. After the match Greg said: "I wish I'd lost in the first round because I wouldn't be feeling so bad now. But Mario served too well and good luck to him." Meanwhile, Mario was on cloud nine after winning his first tournament and having never won so much money for a single days work. He defeated American Robby Ginepri in the opening round and legend John McEnroe in a spectacular semi-final. Mario said: "It's been a great year in England for me and right now I'm speechless. "It's my first tournament win, it isn't an ATP event but it was worth fighting for. I was just concentrating on serving." British tennis sensation Andrew Murray was also in action as he replaced an injured Tim Henman. His opening match was the daunting prospect of taking on one of the greatest tennis players of all time, John McEnroe. Andrew showed us flashes of brilliance but the consistency and unrelenting serve and volley game of Jonny Mac was too much for the youngster to cope with as he lost 6-1. After the match Mac commented on his opponent and his future involvement with British tennis: "Murray is the type of player I hope I will be involved with because I think he has the potential to be a good player. "The whole idea is that I will be helping the Lawn Tennis Association initiative by working with some kids and he's the obvious choice. "At first the idea was I would be a figurehead but I want to get down in the trenches and hit with the kids." |
